History & Origin

The Ibizan Hound is thought to have evolved from the Tesem, the ancient Egyptian hunting dog as early as the 8th century BC.

Ibizan Hound Temperament

The Ibizan Hound was originally bred to help with hunting small games on the Balearic island of Ibiza. They have rather strong personalities, confidence, obedience and very agile. They're friendly dogs, making them a wonderful addition to a family with children.

Ibizan Hound Training

Training an Ibizan Hound is rather easy as they're very obedient, willing and intelligent. This wonderful dog breed is a pleasure to have in the home because of their loving and disciplined ways.

Like all dog breeds, the Ibizan Hound requires early socialisation to grow into a well-balanced and well-behaved dog. They do have the tendency to chase small animals, so wouldn't suit living with other small household pets.

Grooming

The Ibizan Hound doesn't require much grooming. Twice weekly brushing is enough to keep their coats in excellent condition. They do tend to shed during the shedding season and would, therefore, require more brushing than usual.

As with all dog breeds, they require regular cleaning of their teeth, paws and ears.

Health

The Ibizan Hound is generally healthy, but like other dog breeds they are predisposed to certain health conditions such as:

  • Cataracts
  • Seizures
  • Allergies
  • Deafness
  • Retinal Dysplasia

Ibizan Hound Exercise Needs

The Ibizan Hound requires moderate levels of exercise to help keep healthy and fit. On a daily basis, they require 60-80 minutes of outdoor exercise to including walking with as much time off the lead as possible.

They also require plenty of mental stimulation to ensure they stay well-balanced and mentally fit.

Children and other pets

The Ibizan Hound gets on well with children because of their playful nature. Playtime should always be supervised to prevent rough play. They also get on very well with other dogs and can learn to get on well with cats provided they are trained correctly and from a young age.
