Neapolitan Mastiff Overview

This dog breed is often referred to as the gentle giant. They’re a typical guard dog and spend most of their time protecting their loved ones. Their looks are deceiving, whilst they aim to protect this dog breed is not one for fighting.

If you consider yourself as a neat freak, then this may not be the right dog breed for you. Unlike other dog breeds, the Neo is prone to drooling and is one of the gassiest dog breeds of all. You’ll need plenty of cleaning wipes and air freshener to overcome this. If this doesn't faze you then the Neo is an especially amazing dog breed.

The Neo’s coat comes in a solid grey, mahogany, black or in brindle.

The Neo has a coat that comes in solid grey, black, mahogany, and tawny or in tan brindle, in which the dog appears dark with tan stripes. A Neo with a white spot on the head is disqualified from the show ring, but it doesn't affect his ability to be a companion or guardian.

This dog breed generally weighs in the region of 120 to 200 pounds and stands at 2 feet.

History & Origin

The Neapolitan Mastiff is an Italian dog breed and descends from the traditional guard dogs of central Italy. The Neapolitan Mastiff first originated back in 1949.

Neapolitan Mastiff Temperament

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a friendly, loyal and affectionate dog breed with a lot of love to give. They make wonderful family dogs and tend to get on very well with children because of their playful nature. They're very protective over their family and love to show off their playful ways.

Neapolitan Mastiff Training

The Neapolitan Mastiff isn't the easiest dog breed to train as they can be stubborn. Positive reinforcement training is key as any negative enforcement towards their training will undo what they've learnt and they tend not to respond well to being told off. Consistency is important when it comes to training your Neapolitan Mastiff.

Grooming

The Neapolitan Mastiff requires minimum levels of grooming. Brushing their coat 2-3 times a week is enough. As with the majority of dog breeds, you should clean their teeth daily as well as regular cleaning of their ears and paws to prevent any build-up of dirt which can lead to an infection.

Health

The Neapolitan Mastiff tends to suffer most with joint issues because of their size. Unfotuenlty, because of the weight they carry they are also prone to arthritis later on in life as well as hip dysplasia.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is also susceptible to bloat which happens when they drink or eat too quickly.

Neapolitan Mastiff Exercise Needs

The Neapolitan Mastiff requires moderate levels of exercise to help them keep fit and healthy. They should be taken for two walks a day for 30-40 minutes each walk. They also require plenty of mental stimulation to help the keep mentally well-balanced.

Children and other pets

The Neapolitan Mastiff tends to get on very well with children of all ages. Playtime should be supervised by an adult, especially when young children play because of the dog's size. This dog breed gets on well with other household pets provided they are socialised correctly from a young age.
